Marlin fishing with Babywane
The waters of Guadeloupe are ideal for fishing these large fish, kings of sport fishing.... Marlin fishing is practiced in winter and spring from November to June.
Characteristics of the blue marlin
It is large in size from 80kg to 300kg for 2.5m to 5m in length. Coppery brown in color with blue highlights with a slender body, it has a developed dorsal fin, a large caudal fin and a rostrum or sword.
It feeds on squid, blue trevally, bonito, black tuna, yellowfin tuna and dolphinfish, using its proboscis to stun its prey.
This fish has an extremely developed survival instinct, and during combat it will do anything to free itself.
The fight can last from 45 minutes to several hours, which is why “BIG FISHING or SPORT FISHING AT SEA”.
In this fight, the marlin can practice several release techniques, probe, then come up and jump vertically while shaking its head violently or pass over the side of the boat or come out in front.
Its first rush is dazzling and can last several minutes. It puts a very heavy test on the equipment which must be checked and adjusted at each outing.
The sensations, from the very violent bite, the blow of the lures, to the sight of this large fish on the edge of the boat after a long fight, are very strong and unforgettable.
Sailfish swordfish
The sailfish is part of the marlin family and not the swordfish and should be called sailfish. The sailfish marlin weighs from 10Kg to 30Kg and can measure up to 2.5m in length. Of the big game fish, it is certainly the most majestic. It is characterized by an extremely developed dorsal, thus forming a sort of sail.
It feeds on squid, small tuna and small sea bream.
In combat, it frequently leaps out of the water with its back extended and shaking its head to shake off the lure.
He is a fighter who is especially beautiful to see on board the boat.
The white marlin and the spearfish
More rare in our waters of Guadeloupe, it weighs from 10Kg to 50kg for 2.5m in length. The white marlin is fluorescent blue and not white in the water with a dorsal having a hollow in its first part. The Lancer has no rostrum and is silver in color.
They feed in the same way as the sailfish.
In sea fishing, these are fish that can also jump out of the water vertically or horizontally and many successive jumps.
Marlin fishing techniques
It is fished by heavy trolling with 5 rods from 50lbs to 80lbs and 2 to 3 teasers. It can also be fished by slower trolling with live or dead bonito with 2 teasers or by sight when heavy trolling.
Marlins are at the top of the food chain and are naturally curious. Long trolling is a fishing technique that aims to trigger the predatory instinct and is extremely effective for marlin fishing.
For these large fish I practice the capture, release “No kil” technique, they are systematically released.
Expert's advice
Marlin fishing requires patience because the long drag can last several hours before you get the magic bite, and what a bite!
This fishing is a team fishing, with actions to be carried out for all participants. Indeed, the marlin has an extraordinary survival instinct and it will do everything to escape. It is therefore necessary that the boat be maneuvered as quickly as possible and that all theirs and teasers in the water are in the boat as quickly as possible.
